The poker world has gone through incredible growth in the last few years. The reason for this, is in part due to the rapid increase in online play. Dan Harrington, who won the WSOP Main Event in 1995, deseves a place on this list of player/writers. With millions in career tournament earnings, 2 bracelets earned at the wsop, and a WPT championship too, he absolutely has to be considered a champion poker player. His stategy trilogy, Harrington on holdem 1,2 and 3 1,2 and 3, put to print in 2005, is seen as a tournament poker must read.
Dan focuses solely with the world of tournament poker, exploring the various aspects of playing tournaments. Many regular players have felt that, Dan gave out too many secrets to an ever growing field of players hungry for knowledge. The information in this book has lowered a couple of the edge old regulars could count on having against many players. Worth a look for all tournament players.
David Sklansky might not be known as the great player that the others listed are. Surprising to most people though, he has captured a total of three WSOP titles. We know David Sklansky more as a writer than as a player. He has produced a number of poker books, on basically all of the various games that are being played today.
Even though he goes into poker from every angle, he empisizes the mathmatical part of correct poker plays. He breaks down the situations making it so that you can understand the value of your decisions. Playing with a drawing hand can cost you money in some instances, and save you money sometimes. He helps you to know how to work out probabilities even though you have partial information. Which is the key to be a winning player.
Old timer Doyle Brunson took down the big one (WSOP Main Event) two times. Not ony did he win twice, he won back to back 1976 and ‘77. It’s widely viewed that Doyle is the best ever. He holds on to an impressive 10 WSOP bracelets, and has won on the World Poker Tour as well. He plays as a regular in the big game, considered the toughest cash game in the world. Doyle wrote Super System back in the 1970’s, and it has been called the ultimate guide to professional poker by many poker greats.
His super system books are his strategy classics. In these great books he covers the different types of poker games commonly played. In the super system books he lets other great players help with the task, of educating on how to play the different games. So basically, it must be considered a collaboration. Since super system 1 is considered somewhat outdated, The second one is there to enhance, and complete Brunson’s original effort.
One of the nicest men in poker, Barry Greenstein is also one of the best. He has won three WSOP events, in three different disciplines of poker, and has also won on the World Poker Tour. Include well over $6 million in career winnings, and a reputation as a winner in the largest cash games that are played, and you have one monster player. He wrote Ace On The River to present his approach to professional poker.
The general approach of Mr. Greenstein’s book is unique when compared to your run of the mill strategy poker books. Barry tries to to give us his vision into what it’s like being in the game for a living. He has strategy analysis as well, but has more interest in making you aware of the variety of opponents, their style of play, and the unique problems, that you will run into.
All of these players have put a lot of time and work to help us have a great base of poker information. Even some top pros have pointed to these books as critical factors in helping them become great players You should take the time to read these books your play at the tables will improve.
